About Kumbh Mela

One of the largest and most sacred religious gatherings in the world

Kumbh Mela Gathering

Meaning & Significance

The word Kumbh means "pitcher" or "pot." It refers to a mythical pot of nectar (amrit) that emerged during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). According to Hindu mythology, drops of nectar fell at four places on Earth while gods and demons fought over the pot.

Purpose

Devotees believe that bathing in the holy river during Kumbh washes away sins and helps attain salvation (moksha). This sacred ritual brings millions together in a spiritual journey of purification and enlightenment.
